About

Phoebe Madden successfully combines performing with teaching. She has a passion for both.

Mission

Above all, I am committed to helping my student develop his or her voice in a healthy way. My equally important task is to give him or her the confidence to communicate honestly in a song. Helping a student literally and figuratively find his or her voice requires sensitivity, patience, and careful attention to the student’s overall well-being. I begin by identifying where the student’s strengths are, and then I “zero in” on how we can build on those strengths to fill in the rest.

Additionally, I prioritize teaching my students to practice self-trust while simultaneously encouraging and appreciating their peers. I have witnessed the power of positive and thoughtful peer feedback for a developing singer, and I work hard to create an uplifting studio environment to meet this need particularly in adolescents. In this way, collaboration among my students is a natural process and an enjoyable aspect of their development as well-trained musicians and actors.

Theater experience

I am blessed to have been raised in a creative family. The daughter of a RADA trained actress and the granddaughter of a classical mezzo soprano, I have always blended my love of theater and music. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Trinity College, majoring in theater and dance, I began my professional theater career and trained in NYC with the some of the most sought-after teachers on Broadway. Very soon, I landed both musical theater and dramatic leading roles in NYC and in regional theater, and I completed a national tour as Nellie in Some Enchanted Evening. Other favorite roles include Ado Annie (Oklahoma), Deirdre (I Hate Hamlet), Annelle (Steel Magnolias), and Sister Amnesia (Nunsense.)

After starting a family in Rhode Island, I opened my studio in 2000 and continued to teach and perform there for seventeen years. Every year, I directed and staged two local voice concerts showcasing my many talented students. I was also a two-time soloist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and I enjoyed the opportunity to sing for large audiences at the annual East Greenwich Summer’s End Concert. Also in East Greenwich, I took part in a community effort to re-open a local historic theater, The Greenwich Odeum, and I both directed and performed in its Grand Re-Opening concert. Over the course of several years, I built a successful concert series, Broadway at the Towers: Phoebe Madden and Friends, singing to often sold-out crowds at the Narragansett Towers. During this time, I also recorded two albums with my college mentor Gerald Moshell. Phoebe Sings Broadway and Phoebe in Love feature some wonderful guest artists, including two of my students.
